"Do it yourself" sounds so simple, especially when decorating the house for the holidays. But not everyone is a born crafter, packing a glue gun in a color-coordinated holster.
"Most of us would love to be creative, but we don't know where to get started," says Sandy Sandler, the QVC bow-making maven who teaches crafts to the decidedly non-crafty. "People get too intimidated to allow themselves to be creative; you just need to feel comfortable and find the right opportunity."
That opportunity is coming fast. Thanksgiving starts the annual parade of holiday get-togethers. And in a tough economy, party planners are looking for fun and frugal alternatives to store-bought, pre-packaged glitz.
Where to find them? First, look outside. Nature offers a bounty of beautiful raw material. Leaves, twigs, acorns, nuts, pine cones, seed pods – all offer interesting textures and warm hues. And if they're already in your yard, these materials carry the best price – free....
